GEOSCIENCES

The Geosciences Program of the San Diego Supercomputer Center's Science and R&D Division is aimed at helping the US and international geoscience communities develop state-of-the-art information technology resources for innovative Geoscience research opportunities. Activties at the Geosciences Program cover a wide range of disciplines and needs in the geosciences. The following are brief examples of types of activities our group is involved in. For further information about the activities and how you can partner with us, please contact the Geosciences Program Coordinator, Dogan Seber.

Cyberinfrastructure Development

  • GEON: Geosciences Network
The GEOsciences Network (GEON) project is prototyping interpretive environments using advanced information technologies to facilitate collaborative, inter-disciplinary science efforts. Within the network scientists will be able to discover data, tools, and models via portals, using advanced, semantics-based search engines and query tools, in a uniform authentication environment that provides controlled access to a wide range of resources. A services-based environment facilitates creation of scientific workflows that are executed in the distributed environment. Advanced GIS mapping, 3D, and 4D visualization tools allow scientists to interact with the data. Such an environment enables new modes of science and can transform the day-to-day conduct of science.

  • CHRONOS
CHRONOS (Greek: time) is working with the Earth science community to develop a dynamic, interactive and time-calibrated network of databases and visualization and analytical methodologies for sedimentary geology and paleobiology. The CHRONOS System provides a platform for modern, innovative Earth history research, hosts and develops educational resources, and gives access to the general public to new knowledge of Earth science facts and issues. Our group is developing advance database intergation tools for CHRONOS.

  • CUAHSI HIS

  • Digitial Earth Developing a knowledge node and data access point for Earth science researchers

  • Discover Our Earth: A collaborative research project designed to develop interactive, web-based teaching and learning tools for middle school, hogh school and college students. It is a resource for formal and informal educational activities dealing with simple Earth science topics, such as Plate Tectonics, Volcanoes, Sea level change, topography.
